Your Houston is a grassroots
non-profit. Our primary focus
is on Quality of Life issues
that affect all Houstonians.
What is a Quality of Life issue? Well I’m glad you asked! QOL issues are the ones we all face and make an impact on or have the potential to disrupt our daily lives. Flooding from hurricanes and thunder storms, ease of transportation across the city, and transparency within our local government just to name a few.
Our Focus
Resiliency.
Your Houston is committed to building a more resilient city. While Harvey wasn’t the first event to test our city’s capacity to recover quickly from adversity, it was surely one of the most dramatic. We prefer to view resiliency in a broad way that includes not only physical infrastructure but also residents and small businesses.
Our strategies include
Promoting smart development that protects lives and property from a variety of challenges.
Continuing to diversify Houston’s economy, protecting its stability and long term outlook.
Expanding flood literacy for all Houstonians, including our leaders.
Neighborhoods.
Great cities cannot exist without thriving neighborhoods. The Houston Heights is a success story, but it wasn’t always that way before citizens got engaged and demanded more from their leaders. Through education, empowerment and electing good leaders to local government, we can improve the quality of life for every Houstonian.
Our strategies include
Strengthen Houston’s existing neighborhoods while protecting neighborhood culture and character
Advocate for policies that create workforce, affordable and mixed-use housing
Foster enhanced pedestrian realms along transit corridors while strengthening the public right-of-way
Mobility.
Houston has always been a dynamic city – a place where citizens can move mountains to achieve their dreams. Too often, however, it feels like it’s easier to move a mountain than it is to move around town on roads clogged with traffic.
Your Houston is focused on enhancing mobility options to keep Houston moving forward.
Our strategies include
Encourage walkability and pedestrian-friendly development
Embrace and pilot innovative transportation solutions
Promote multi-modal forms of transportation throughout Houston
Transparency.
Your Houston believes a transparent government is a more accessible and accountable government.
Advocating for more transparency and accessibility in local government isn’t always the most flashy topic, but we believe it’s so important.
Our strategies include:
Establishing notification requirements for tenants that inform them the property they are about to rent lies in a mapped floodplain or has previously flooded in the past 5 years
Require local governments to make Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) and Local Government Cooperation (LGC) Meetings, City Council, and County Commissioners meetings to include a virtual component that allows residents to participate.
